Military Reciprocities

Candidates who have medical experience through the military medical corps program or military EMT program may qualify to enter a SC EMT-Basic refresher course. Perspective candidates must submit the following documentation:

 * A copy of the candidate's military training records delineating emergency medical training such as the 91A or 91B medical programs. Any documentation which details the content of the training will be helpful. Such documentation may be a DD-214 and/or medical course completion certificates.

* Any information which will assist with the verification process of the candidate's medical training.

* A copy of the candidate's BLS credential or pocket card.

* A completed and signed reciprocity application.

 If the candidate's training can be verified as equivalent to the DOT EMT-Basic curriculum, a letter of permission to enter a SC EMT-Basic refresher training program will be mailed to the candidate.

 The letter of permission is the candidate's authority to enter the refresher program and, if successful, qualify to take the SC EMT certification examination. A reciprocity candidate will NOT be permitted to take the SC EMT certification examination UNLESS a prior letter of permission was obtained authorizing them entrance into the refresher program AND they successfully complete a SC EMT refresher training program.

 If the military EMT is also a national registered EMT - OR - can document EMT certification from another state, the candidate may qualify to request either direct reciprocity or to challenge the SC state certification examination per the information located in the “Out-Of-State EMT” or “National Registered EMT” section of this packet.

Nurse Reciprocities

 Candidates who are licensed Registered Nurses may qualify to enter a SC EMT refresher course. Perspective candidates must submit the following documentation:

 * A copy of the candidate's registered nurse license.
* Medical Resume documenting Critical Care Nursing - OR - experience in the emergency room.
* A completed and signed reciprocity application.
* Qualifying Registered Nurses may request any level of refresher training.

 If the candidate's training and experience can be verified, a letter of permission to enter a SC EMT refresher training program will be mailed to the candidate.

 The letter of permission is the candidate's authority to enter the refresher program and, if successful, qualify to take the SC EMT certification examination. A reciprocity candidate will NOT be permitted enter a SC refresher course - OR - to take the SC EMT certification examination UNLESS a prior letter of permission was obtained authorizing them entrance into the refresher program AND they successfully complete a SC EMT refresher training program.

 Attention Intermediates & Paramedics candidates:

 Candidates who successfully complete a department approved refresher training program AND successfully pass the state written and practical examination must gain sponsorship from a SC licensed ambulance service's director AND medical control physician before state certification can be granted. Candidates will have up to six (6) months after successfully completing the state certification examination to gain sponsorship.

 NOTE: Failure to gain sponsorship within six (6) months from successful completion of the state certification examination will require the candidate to successfully complete another refresher program, state certification examination AND must still gain sponsorship within six (6) months from successful completion of the state certification examination.

 

National Registered EMTs

 National Registry EMTs may be able to obtain direct reciprocity in South Carolina by meeting the following requirements:

 All candidates must establish residence in South Carolina OR provide a letter from a SC licensed ambulance provider indicating promise of employment contingent upon SC certification (paid or volunteer) prior to requesting direct reciprocity.


NR EMT-BASIC: DIRECT RECIPROCITY

 * Submit a copy of their current National Registry certificate and/or pocket card - AND - a copy of the written examination grade report is required if your registry grade is less than four (4) years old.

* Submit a course outline of your last refresher or initial course as documentation of completion of the 1994 DOT EMT-Basic curriculum to include documentation of training in Orotracheal Intubation (ET) - Module 8 of the 1994 DOT EMT-Basic curriculum and IV maintenance. Documentation of "speciality" training (i.e. ACLS, etc.) Is NOT acceptable.

* A copy of the candidate's current BLS credential or pocket card.

* A completed and signed reciprocity application AND SC Certificate Application* (white) card.

* Those candidates who meet the requirements above will be mailed a SC Certificate Application (white, green or blue) card. Once completed and returned, the candidate will receive a SC EMT certification which will expire three (3) years from the issue date of their most recent National Registry certificate.

 Those candidate's who can NOT meet the requirements as stated above or who have National Registry certificates that are expired or near expiration (within the last six months), will be mailed a letter of permission to enter a SC EMT refresher course.

 

NR EMT-INTERMEDIATE: DIRECT RECIPROCITY

 * Submit a copy of their current National Registry certificate and/or pocket card - AND - a copy of the written examination grade report (required) if your registry grade is less than four (4) years old.

* Submit a course outline of your last refresher or initial course as documentation of training in Endotracheal Intubation (ET) AND Intraosseous Infusion (IO). Documentation of "speciality" training (i.e. ACLS, etc.) or taking “part” of a course just to satisfy these requirements is NOT acceptable. Training other than ET, such as EOA, EGTA, PTL, Combi-Tube, etc., is NOT acceptable.

* A copy of the candidate's current BLS credential or pocket card.

* A completed and signed reciprocity application AND SC Certificate Application* (green) card.

* Those candidates who meet the requirements above will be mailed a SC Certificate Application (white, green or blue) card. Once completed and returned, the candidate will receive a SC EMT certification which will expire three (3) years from the issue date of their most recent National Registry certificate. Intermediate candidates MUST have the endorsement section of the certificate application card signed by their EMS sponsor - AND - medical control physician.

 Those candidate's who can NOT meet the requirements as stated above or who have National Registry certificates that are expired or near expiration (within the last six months), will be mailed a letter of permission to enter a SC EMT refresher course.

 

NR EMT-PARAMEDIC: DIRECT RECIPROCITY

 * Submit a copy of their current National Registry certificate and/or pocket card - AND - a copy of the written examination grade report (required) if your registry grade is less than four (4) years old.

* A copy of the candidate's current BLS credential or pocket card.

* A copy of the candidate's current ACLS credential or pocket card.

* A completed and signed reciprocity application AND SC Certificate Application* (blue) card.

* Those candidates who meet the requirements above will be mailed a SC Certificate Application (white, green or blue) card. Once completed and returned, the candidate will receive a SC EMT certification which will expire three (3) years from the issue date of their most recent National Registry certificate. Paramedic candidates MUST have the endorsement section of the certificate application card signed by their EMS sponsor - AND - medical control physician.

 Those candidate's who can NOT meet the requirements as stated above or who have National Registry certificates that are expired or near expiration (within the last six months), will be mailed a letter of permission to enter a SC EMT refresher course.

 The letter of permission is the candidate's authority to enter the refresher program and, if successful, qualify to take the SC EMT certification examination. A reciprocity candidate will NOT be permitted enter a SC EMT refresher course - OR - take the SC EMT certification examination UNLESS they obtain the letter of permission authorizing their entrance into the refresher program AND successfully complete a SC EMT refresher training program.

 

Intermediate & Paramedic Candidates

Candidates who successfully complete a department approved refresher training program AND successfully pass the state written and practical examination must gain sponsorship from a SC licensed EMS director AND medical control physician before state certification can be granted. Candidates will have up to six (6) months after successfully completing the state certification examination to gain sponsorship.
