Employment Information

  • Spartanburg EMS  is seeking qualified applicants for future positions.

  • Spartanburg, South Carolina is widely known for many things; the home of BMW, the summer training camp for the Carolina Panthers NFL team and one of the best EMS systems in the country.

  • Spartanburg EMS was selected as the NAEMT National Paramedic System of the Year in 1989 and has achieved a national reputation as a progressive EMS system.   Over the past 18 years, Spartanburg EMS has garnered many national and state awards.   Spartanburg EMS has had 2 National NAEMT Paramedics of the Year, 1 Braun National EMS paramedic of the Year, 8 South Carolina Paramedics of the Year, the SC Emergency Physician, SC Emergency Nurse and 9 South Carolina State Championship paramedic skills competition teams.  In addition, our Dive Rescue Team was awarded the SC Artz Award for Heroism for their actions during swift water rescues in August 1995.

  • Spartanburg EMS is a full-time EMS service that provides Advanced Life Support care for the City and County of Spartanburg. EMS operates a total of 20 units  (15 paramedic ambulances, 2 paramedic chase trucks, 2 paramedic rescue trucks and a paramedic chase/supervisor unit) daily out of 14 stations with an annual call volume of 31,200 emergency 9-1-1 calls and operates as part of one of the few tiered response systems in the Southeast.

  •  In addition, Spartanburg EMS operates in conjunction with 5 volunteer rescue squads who have approximately 100 volunteer EMTs.

  •  Spartanburg EMS also offers a full range of ALS services, which include; progressive standing orders for EMS paramedics, advanced 12 lead electro-cardiography of cardiac patients, and rapid sequence intubation for airway control.

  • EMS also provides specialized rescue, heavy rescue and automotive extrication services for Spartanburg County and responds to all major accidents and incidents.

  • The EMS Special Rescue Team is responsible for handling water (SCUBA and swift water) rescues and high angle and confined space rescues in Spartanburg County and trains on a year round basis to be able to carry out these rescues. The team is fully trained and equipped to carry out high angle and confined space rescues as well as water rescues.  They are equipped with two zodiac rescue boats, a jet ski, and a large variety of SCUBA equipment.  The EMS Special Rescue Team handles approximately 15 - 20 rescues each year.   EMS also assists the Spartanburg Department of Public Safety with specially trained EMS paramedics to assist them with medical care during tactical law enforcement operations.  This is our busiest special team, handling over 100 SWAT missions each year.    In addition to these special teams, Spartanburg EMS also conducts a variety of pre-hospital research and pilot projects on a local, state and national basis.

  • Two of our field units are what we call Quick Response Vehicles (QRVs).  Spartanburg EMS pioneered the use of QRVs in 1984.  A QRV is staffed with one paramedic and provides paramedic quick response and back up in call zones that are serviced by volunteer rescue squads.  This prevents costly duplication of ambulances and allows more efficient medical care to be provided to the county citizens.

  • At present, we have 140 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees.  Of the full-time personnel, 90% are paramedics and over 95% of these are National Registered Paramedics.  Our crews work a 24-hour on and a 48-hour off work schedule  and are employees of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.  We also have twelve hour shifts that work either days or nights. A full package of employee benefits and pay grades is available upon request.

  •  EMS offers a comprehensive continuing education program that has weekly training sessions to update our employees on all aspects of emergency care.  This education program is used to meet all paramedic recertification requirements for the State of South Carolina and the National Registry of EMTs.  A combination of peer review and physician review committees offers an intensive quality improvement review of EMS calls on a monthly basis.   Monthly written feedback on calls reviewed in the QI process is given to all paramedic employees.

  •  We offer competitive salaries for paramedics that start at approximately $33,299 per year .  Our field employees are hourly employees and the total amount earned annually may be affected by the amount of overtime that is worked by an individual.  Hourly differentials are paid to paramedics with either an Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree to compensate for their education.  Overtime is paid on all time that is worked over 40 hours each week and is paid for departmental training.

  • Spartanburg EMS also has a career ladder in place for its employees that allows EMS paramedics to plan out their advancement through the ranks at Spartanburg EMS.  This enables the paramedics to work on their certifications and get the necessary experience in order to advance their status in the department.  The Senior Paramedic program is designed to give advancement opportunities for field paramedics and allows them to make top wages ranging from $35,501 to $59,082 per year without having to get off the streets and into EMS management.
